new book (June2011) by Annie Duke ( ) but with John Vorhaus ( :more interested now: )

Anyone heard of it? Thoughts?

http://www.amazon.com/Decide-Play-Great-Poker-Strategy/dp/1935396323

"The goal of poker is to make good decisions. Money is simply the way you measure how well you're fulfilling that objective."

"Poker is a game of numerous variables: table position, flop texture, bet sizing, pocket holdings, players in a hand, personalities of the players, and so much more. Decide to Play Great Poker will teach you how to identify and analyze these variables, interchange them within basic game-situation templates, and leave you feeling knowledgeable, comfortable, and confident in any poker situation. Instead of just enumerating rules that work only some of the time, this book will teach you how to become a great poker thinker and strategist, so you can expertly navigate any new poker challenge that comes up."

"If you want a list of strict rules, look else where. But if you want to be shown how to make the correct decisions, regardless of the game, with amazing explanations to prove the decisions validity, well here you go."

'Annie is the rare player who not only plays well but is also an amazing teacher. She and John Vorhaus have closed an important gap in poker lit by writing about the art of poker, not the mechanics. This is an essential book for anyone who wants to take their game to its peak.' --Erik Seiborgdel, All-time tournament-poker money leader

'Trust me, this book will open your eyes again and again. It's packed with so many good tactics that you'll read it more than once!' --Phil Hellmuth, Jr. 12-time World Champion of Poker

'A revolutionary approach to playing no-limit Texas hold em. If this book doesn't improve your game, you aren't paying attention.' --Doyle Brunson, 10-time World Champion of Poker

also, ElkY has a book too, focusing on aggressive MTT play:

and zomg Tri Nguyen has a consumer-market NLHE cashgame book that doesn't cost THOUSANDS of dollars!
http://www.amazon.com/Poker-Blueprint-Advanced-Strategies-Crushing/dp/0982402236/
"Basically, the idea is to maximize your expectation over time regardless of individual hands. In other words, instead of being a nit never risking any money except on premium hands and waiting for a near-lock situation to bet or raise, you have to mix it up enough to generate other opportunities. A pleasant side effect is getting paid off much more often on your premium hands because people think you 3-bet too much. I now welcome deep stack tables instead of avoiding them" <-- okay THAT review pretty much has me SOLD on this book.

I think Jonathan Little beat Elky to the punch. Little's book on aggressive modern day tournament poker cam out in late May (early June in Canada). I read about 100 pages of it yesterday. My building went without power from early morning to around midnight, so it was a good opportunity to get in some reading. Little's book is fantastic, so far. I can't wait to try some of it out. I'm sure I'll donk away my chips at first, until I get better at being aggressive.

But J. Little's earlier tournament book offering was super-nitty compared to how ElkY is famous for playing.

Mr. Little might have increased his aggression/bluff ranges etc. since he was first well-known in the poker world, but at the core I think he's still a lower-level nitty thinker.

I was curious so I skim-read as many free pages of ElkY's book as I could on Amazon ... and WOW it's pretty advanced stuff, it's as detailed as anything Harrington has written, along the lines of Gus Hansen's book with examples and thinking and hand-ranging etc.

But the REAL focus seems to be on 3betting 4betting 5betting, table image, pot control ... basically it's what is going through the minds of the New Breed of hyper-LAGs, the apparent madness that is actually deep thinking (part of the reason why I think of Gus' book) ... with a special bonus mention of what "previously" were trends, and how the online grinders have adapted as a result (i.e. squeeze plays are now more dangerous than ever, ElkY's book explains why, and how to respond). There's even a chapter on how different the LIVE environment is, i.e. what works/doesn't work in contrast with online, including what a 4bet means (rarely a bluff), how 3bets are interpreted during high-blind stages (15-20bb = more raise-folds than open-shoves) ... and again how to exploit this "lag" in how live plays vs. the current online tendencies.

But definitely not a book for a non-experienced MTTer ... :brain tired:

http://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Professional-Tournament-Poker/dp/190446856X
"Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker, Volume 1" deals with the fundamentals of play and how to handle varying stack sizes. It teaches the reader:

·        Why  tournaments are the most profitable form of poker (lol: http://www.google.com/search?q=Why+tournaments+are+the+most+profitable+form+of+poker )
·        When to play small ball and when to play long ball
·        How to understand effective stack size
·        How to tailor your play to winning, not just cashing

...plus much more

http://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Professional-Tournament-Poker-Stages/dp/1904468586
"Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker, Volume 1" dealt with the fundamentals of play. Volume 2 builds on this base and examines the highly complex issue of how to handle the different stages of a tournament. At times the best strategy is to play loose, create problems for your opponent and thus keep accumulating chips. At other times an ultra-tight strategy will be the most profitable. Understanding when to "change gears" is a highly developed skill that requires a great deal of study and experience. Jonathan Little has that experience.

Sounds like Little's book (at least Volume 1) tries to reach even the "beginner" audience, and thus is not nearly as heavy study material as ElkY's. And ElkY's has lotsa contributions from Lee Nelson, and Tony "Bond18" Dunst. 'nuff said Wink

Tommy Angelo Has a New Book and is Jumping in the Well
http://www.cardschat.com/f13/tommy-angelo-has-new-book-jumping-198406/

Quote
I just got back from a week at the WSOP and I’m so full of poker joy right now I could just jump into a well. And I have a new book out. It’s available in print and ebook at Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.de. Here’s the blurb that tells what’s in it:
A Rubber Band Story and Other Poker Tales by Tommy Angelo collects the best articles, blogs, and stories from Tommy’s last 12 years of writing and showcases them with eighteen new introductions and afterwords. Here you'll find poker war stories from his years as a pro, poker fiction, ruminations on poker rules, and more – including a strong selection of articles on tilt, the author's signature topic. The new commentaries, found only in this volume, take you behind the curtain on Angelo's history and writing process. New readers will appreciate the humor and fresh perspective on poker, and existing fans will enjoy the exclusive commentaries as well as having a convenient collection of Angelo's most popular material.
In other news, my first book, Elements of Poker, is now available as an ebook, not only at the Amazons but also at iBooks, and Barnes and Noble. And my website, tommyangelo.com, has a whole new look. And I have started a mailing list, which you can join at my site or by just sending me an email at tommy@tommyangelo and saying "Please put me on the mailing list." And my blog is at tommyangelo.com/blog. And now that the announcements are finally over, let The Well conversations begin!

Thanks to the CardsChat for the invite,

Tommy

edit: GREAT (though brief) Well thread, very much worth reading. But if iyo it's TL;DR then here's something to take out of it...

Play fewer hands
...
"mindful breathing... awareness that let's you see what you are thinking about, 'I was just thinking about such and such' is the repetitive act that builds concentration power, and calmness under pressure"
...
It's never wrong to not play *

:facepalm-worthy profound but obvious truth boiled down to utter simplicity:

* irony:

ok, I, offically am playing the ME.Do I feel good? No. Do I want to play? No. Am I playing my best? No. Am I gonna try my best? Damn right!!

Downloaded Kindle on my iPhone and got the free 1% preview of Duke's new book. Reads like it might be worth the USD$10 so picked it up.

Totally adding the "Raisers Edge" book to my Amazon cart... mentioned a few times in this 2+2 thread.
Quote
The Raiser's Edge stands on its own, no need to read the first two, and really I thought Kill Phil was not worth my time and never finished all of it. Kill Everyone is much better and covers the whole game and all strategy from preflop to postflop play but can be tedious with all the technical detail. But I liked that book and found it useful.

But if I only read one of their books, it absolutely would be The Raiser's Edge. It is by far the best MTT book I have read and most up to date as well, since it is all about the modern aggressive style so common in MTT today.
