profound, when you take a moment to think about that. With deeper consideration you realize that the opposing viewpoint seems correct as well (or instead)... Do you play to maximize value in the specific hand? Or do you play in a way that would bring overall the most profit long-term based on the entire range of hands you would have at this point? :indecision: Maybe both are kinda the same correct thinking, as long as
this kind of checklist* is in the back of your mind for every hand you play, every action you take...
a nice summary of the key take-aways from the Well:

Before I bet, before my opponent reacts to it, I ask myself:
When I Bet/Raise:
a. What hand can call this bet that I beat?
b. What does my hand look like to him?
c. If I’m raised, what will I do? What hands raise in this spot? Would [insert hand(s) I beat] raise in this spot?
When I check:
a. If he bets, will I call? (Here I usually set a maximum in my head of what I will call)
b. If he bets, what hands that I beat would bet in this spot?
When I call:
a. What does my hand look like to him?
