So I called the 3 bet because the other big stack was in the hand. After he folds the shortie has $1.70 behind. Putting in $3 to win $5.50 after rake ... is that ever good?

Short answer: no.

I'm not sure I'm calling the 3bet PF either here with shorty doing the 3betting and bigstack having a VPIP of almost 50.  Sure, you probably have bigstack at the moment, but shorty is likely ahead and you're basically setmining the flop with 3s.  And unless the fish hits well enough, you might not get paid appropriately to justify the setmine even if you do set up, so it's not the most favorable situation.

It's kinda hard to put math on this setmine, with 2 players in play.  Shorty villain has about 6x the reraise PF, so he's far short of justifying a setmine.  Bigstack has the rest well covered, but with his range, it depends heavily on how fishy he is postflop as to whether it's equitable to setmine.  If shorty wasn't so surely well ahead of your range or more passive, you could float this a lot easier, but it's almost a guarantee you won't survive the flop bet without a third 3, so any as-is equity with bigstack is virtually nonexistent.  So it comes down to simply how easy it is to extract from Bigstack when you set up; but with shorty likely driving the action, it's going to be hard to get him calling light.  Long story short (too late), I'm honestly up in the air on whether the PF call is worthwhile.

Regardless, I'm folding the flop.  You have no fold equity and all you beat are 2 overs with 2 draws and some additional counterfeit outs.
