I do not know the best place to post this so move it or whatever if it is not appropriate here.

It has been posted elsewhere but i would like to get opinions on what any of you think are the best books on low stakes,NL, cash holdem games.

In LHE I started with Sklansky's  "Small Stakes Holdem" and then the "21st centrury version" followed. Although they were tough reading at first, as with anything, the more pratice the more they made sense. Mike Caro helped me to begin to deviate from "proper play" so to speak. Every book I have (and I have bunch) except "Theory of Poker" and a couple dealing with the mental aspects(Schoonmaker...Feeney)are geared towards LHE.

I am truly flying blind in NL and got beat like a rented mule last nite.Definitely I understand the power of position but I am playing to much fit or fold and need something that deals with bet sizing, how aggressive should I be with air,how to estimate range and possibly narrow it down by the size of their bet.. etc.  etc.

Also how do any of you have your HUD set up? I have mine just as it came out of the box but it would be helpful to know what #'s others are looking at  besides just vpip/pfr/afq and what benefit there is to the additional #'s...

and another super simple question....when ppl speak of 3barreling/4barreling and such what exactly do they mean?...

I am not embarrassed in the least to ask these type questions and do not mind doing the leg work searching through forums but find it helpful to be able to bounce questions about the last question I asked off ppl and actually have a conversation about it.No one talks LHE anymore and I by no means am any more than barley above average at it but can definitely atleast spot correct play from incorrect/lucky play in LHE.Right now in NL I am truly a novice and recognize it.

to long a post again...sry

Lots here to answer.

With the HUD, just add stats that you will to be useful. You don't want to be looking at stuff if you don't know what it means. I removed AF because it wasn't telling me anything that I could process at the time. My HUD is

Hands/VPIP/PFR/Cbet/FoldtoCBet
3Bet/Foldto3Bet/4Bet/Foldto4Bet/Won$Showdown
Steal/FoldSBtoSteal/FoldBBtoSteal/CheckRaise/FoldtoCheckRaise

I don't have any labels on my HUD, so it's just a string of numbers separated by slashes, and I colour code the numbers (3Bet is Orange, 4bet is yellow, Steal is red, etc). I also have conditional colours on the VPIP and PFR stats. If VPIP is above a certain number (loose player) it's green (for go), in a normal range it's red (for stop). PFR is the reverse, so the lower number is green, and the higher number is red. I'm essentially looking for2 green lights from an opponent.

I'm also not relying on HUD stats entirely until I have a large sample of them, so I'm continously clicking on the pop up box to break these stats down into position.

Barrels are usually the number of streets people bet. So they "fire" at the flop. Then "double barrel" the turn. The "fire 3 barrels" on the river.

I like the Harrington on Holdem Cash Games books.

thx fletch

Huge help on the hud....The way I read your post you get all these #s on your hud? Does it not clutter your tables? I have been clicking the pop up and trying to use them but it is cumbersome...

I always knew LHE and NL were the same yet different...I had dabbled in NL ,an hour here, an hour there, but to sit and only play NL as the main gig nowadays is....Huh?? can't think of how to state it but mentally different for sure

You can find 'Easy Game', an ebook written by Deuces Cracked instructor BalugaWhale, online. Not sure how much it costs, but it's pretty easy to find for free. I am about to read it. Will report back.

It can get a bit cluttered so I don't use Avatars and use a simple BG

Obviously it's a bit more cluttered at full ring.

This whole thread is prob in the wrong place

I am going to order THREE NL books this wk/end

I have in my mind I want: Theory and Practice by Sklansky .....   Little Green Book by Gordon......if for no other reason than to get a better understanding of some of the NL terminology.

Can anyone recommend ONE book that has to do with NL tourny play that I would get the most out of...tourny play is just kill'in me...

NL cash game I can make small mistakes and still win because the implied is so high when I have a legitimate hand...tourny play ONE mistake and I'm on the rail...atleast that's the way I see it

Yeah it probably belongs in Poker Education, but we're here now. If one of the other mods cares enough they might move it.

Harrington on Hold 'Em is a bit of a standard, and it comes in a couple of volumes, I for the start of the tourny II for the later stages. III is a workbook of examples for you to do as a type of Test. I think is Sklansky is a dry old read, and personally, I would suggest leaving it and buying Vols 1 and 2 of HOH.

All four of these were ordered in the "used" section at amazon.
All four of these were in excelent condition.
The Green Book was not shipped directly from amazon but another store. It was sold as used but I will be darn if I can find anything wrong with it.Even the dust jacket is in perfect condition.

Needless to say I am very happy with the way this played out. Grin
