What Site Should We Play On?
«
on:
June 24, 2011, 10:16:45 AM »
I asked this after Black Friday, and got roughly the equivalent of chirping crickets for an answer. But this is vitally important to this site. After the DOJ depantsed us all, we've had nowhere to have forum games, save play money at Stars. I understand there was shock and uncertainty right after that day, and perhaps it was to early to be thinking about a new site; but now if we're not just going to resign ourselves to waiting for the US Government to choose our site for us a year or two from now, we need to get cracking. I know a lot of you guys are itching to play; so let's figure out where we can do that.
Obviously Prodigy would be the most beneficial for this site, as we have an affiliation. It would offer high rakeback, and pretty soft competition. The traffic volume there, however, is low. But then, now that the big 2 are gone to us in the states, everything is low traffic. Just something we're gonna have to swallow until the US' Supersite of choice emerges (Harrah's Online sounds like a good name).
But there are some sites with decent volume we can look into as well. Cake, for instance, is well establisned, has rakeback, and is still cool for us in the US to play at. However, I haven't at this time checked to ensure that it is based entirely overseas and safe from US seizures. Same gig with Bodog, although there is a rewards program instead of rakeback. Doyle's Room might be another choice, again depending on the location of their server and assets.
I'd like you guys for your sake and ours to actually take a little time thinking about this, so we can all get back to playing real poker again instead of resigning ourselves to play chippie heaven. The suggestions above are worth researching, and any other suggestions are welcome as well. I would urge you all to poke around at some sites and see what you think of them, so we can figure out which one we can play at. Even if we don't centralize on one site to play for the forum, at least individually we may find a place we like.
Please respond with any and all thoughts here.

Received the pretty DOJ/Homeland Security page when I just visited Doyle's Room. Pretty sure they were on Cake though, which might not bode too well. Just signed up to the Bodog Affiliate program. Will post a banner/link here when we've been approved so people can sign up through that if they need to create an account.
Just created an affiliate program with cake. Click the link below if you need to create an account. EDIT: Just checking that you get rakeback when you sign up through us.

And yes, where ever we play is probably just a stop gap measure until the U.S. regulates and gets approved sites up and running. When that happens, our affiliations are bound to be with one of those.

Poker Host and Carbon are both on Merge Network where I can not play. After a quick search I find Oddsmaker is the same.

Well Doyle's Room got hit not too long ago, so Cake is out of the question. I played on Bodog a few years ago and I wasn't that amazed by their site, but I also wasn't completely disgusted with it. Might be our only way to go at this point.

According to the in-house reporter, Merge is no longer allowing US players to sign up, so that kills Carbon, Poker Host et al, even if we ignored the fact that Aussies are already shut out.
Prodigy is looking better by the minute. I'll look into Oddsmaker.

It's Merge, too. JB makes a reasonable point about Cake not being a good choice since Doyles Room was shut down. Bodog? I mean really any site is a bit of a risk for the U.S. players.

me personally, I'm not making anymore contributions to the sites---out way to much money on FTP. And I see that any site that achieves success or looks like it might will just get chopped down by the hit men for the the gaming concerns (DOJ). Sad to say, but the Harrahs and MGMs of the world have won this round.
The worst part of it is, after they've gotten laws passed that only favor the biggies, we'll probably come back on hands and knees begging them to take our money.
Never thought i'd miss online poker as much as I do.

Why can't you play on Merge network Fletch?
There's an Australian law against providing Interactive Online Gambling to the citizens of our fair land. No-one much bothers with it, but Merge is an Australian company, and is therefore complying with it. Won't let us play.

Doyle's Room is not part of Cake. They're part of the Yatahey network, which is also home to True Poker.
Any cake room is a good choice, but if Prodigy is the official poker room for the forums, might as well play there. I kinda like the Everleaf software, and you get 40% rakeback there. For some reason I am getting 46% on Minted Poker (another Everleaf skin), but I would gladly switch to Prodigy to support the forums.

Question: if you're in Austrailia, can't you still play on Stars, and other Euro-sites?
I'm def. not playing on Cake after reading most of this thread:
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/28/internet-poker/won-50000-60000-off-guy-cake-poker-cakepoker-takes-my-funds-update-sign-nda-1040155/
If you haven't seen it, Cliffs: Guy gets 60k confiscated that he won at the tables without ever being accused of doing anything wrong (was rather a malfunction with another skin on the network resulting in his opponent basically printing $ for himself, then playing with it). Not only do they not refund the money, they also ask him to sign an NDA before they even talk with him about it, and in general seem either really incompetent or really scummy or likely a bit of both. As of now it appears the guy has gotten a lawyer but not signed the NDA.
If I was going to sign up somewhere else as a US player right now (altho I have no immediate plans to), I might make it something on the Everleaf network.
I got on merge before that June 1st rakeback ending deadline though, so that's where I go when I want some non play $ poker for the time being. If I had done a bit more research before signing up I probably would have used RPM but I kinda did it last minute on a whim and so signed up my rakeback account with Carbon.

Yeah, pretty much anywhere. I never knew there were any exclusions until I tried to sign up to RPM and discovered I couldn't deposit, transfer or sit at real money tables. Party Poker and Pacific Poker were 2 of the first sites I played at.

Maybe RPM is based in Australia, and don't want to risk being indicted by the aussie gov't. Bodog used to be based in Canada, and didn't accept Canadian players.

That's exactly the situation, sir. Merge is Australian.
